Working meeting in Slovyansk, OSCE project: Donbas TMFs 16.09.2019

The parties of OSCE project “Assistance in the Donbas environmental monitoring system expansion” met today in Slovyansk town to discuss the current state of Donbas TMFs and their possible emergency impact on water bodies under the military actions.

The Siverskyi Donets River Basin Authority hosted the event participants - representatives of the Reform Support Team at the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources of Ukraine, the Environment Departments of Donetsk and Luhansk Regional State Administrations, the OSCE Project Co‑ordinator in Ukraine and TMF-operators.

 

The Project subject, namely the industrial waste management issues and the environmental impact from long-term operation of such waste facilities, meets the planned priority areas of recently established Ministry of Energy and Environmental Protection of Ukraine.

 

TMF-operators – event attendees were selected under the clear criteria in terms of emergency prevention in situations of armed conflict: stored waste toxicity and volume, proximity to the conflict parties’ demarcation line, water bodies, residential and industrial buildings. The enterprises specialists provided an overview of their TMFs’ operating features, location specifics, technical and socio-economic issues of environmental safety ensuring. They expressed the cooperative attitude, and assured the Project experts in transparency and necessary support during research activities.

 

Right after the working meeting the Project team plans to visit six TMFs in the Donetsk region.
