Commission on Sustainable Use and Protection of the Dniester River Basin (the Dniester Commission) held the second meeting on 4 and 5 April 2019 in Kyiv. Within the UNDP/ GEF/ OSCE/ UNECE project “Enabling transboundary co-operation and integrated water resources management in the Dniester River Basin” our specialists presented the first research results on the Tailings Management Facilities (TMFs) current state in the Dniester River Basin in 2018 and the plans for 2019.

The specialists reported on a comprehensive study of industrial waste storages in the Dniester River Basin according to the current legislation. The Reports on works performed are at the stage of discussion with TMF operators.

For 2019, it is planned to continue the TMFs inventory in the Dniester River Basin. Additionally our experts in cooperation with the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Ukraine have started to collect actual data on all TMFs of Ukraine.

The commission secretariat noted the relevance of the TMF safety issues in Ukraine, emphasizing that these objects are of potentially high hazard, both for the environment and for human health.
